WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY

  • If you own a diesel anywhere near Berea, KY, save yourself the trouble and call Preston Jones at PJ Diesel. I brought him my 2021 Silverado Duramax (L5P) and the whole experience was as good as it gets. Preston is honest and upfront with you from the first conversation. He got back to me fast every time I reached out, and the turnaround on my truck was quick. He knows these trucks inside and out, and his pricing is fair. He came in less expensive than a lot of other shops, and the work is excellent. What really sets him apart is how he treats his customers after the job is done. Any time I've wanted to pick his brain about my truck since then, he's been glad to share what he knows. My truck is running better than it ever has. I'm in Richmond, and I would've driven a lot farther than that for work this good. A reliable diesel mechanic you can trust is hard to find, and I couldn't ask for anything better. I'd recommend PJ Diesel to anyone in Madison County or beyond.

About Truck Diagnostics

Common questions and tips from our work with Berea customers.

Can a code reader tell me what is wrong?
A code tells you which system flagged a problem, not always what caused it. A low boost code, for example, could be a leaking hose, a sticking turbo vane or a bad sensor. A full diagnosis uses the codes as a starting point, then looks at live data, tests the parts involved and inspects the engine by hand to find the real cause before anything is replaced.
Why does my diesel keep throwing emissions codes?
Modern diesels use a DPF, EGR system and often DEF to control emissions. Lots of short trips and idling can keep the DPF from cleaning itself, and EGR parts can clog with soot over time. Sensors in these systems also wear out. Repeated emissions codes are worth diagnosing early, because ignoring them can lead to reduced power mode and more costly repairs.

Tip

Write down what the truck is doing

Before you bring your truck in, note when the problem happens: cold or warm, idling or under load, towing or empty, on hills or flat ground. Write down any warning lights and any new sounds or smells. These details help narrow down the cause faster during diagnostics, and they are easy to forget once the truck is parked at the shop.

Tip

Do not clear codes before the shop sees them

It is tempting to clear a check-engine light with a basic scanner, but that also erases stored data that shows when and how the fault happened. If the problem comes back, the shop has less to work with. Leave the codes in place, keep driving gently if the truck is safe to drive, and have it scanned and tested so the cause can be found.

We plug into your truck's computer, read all the fault codes, and run tests to isolate the real problem. We'll also inspect the engine, fuel system and turbo by hand. Then we explain what we found and what it costs to fix it before we do any work.

Diesel engines are different from gas engines. The fuel system, the turbo, the injectors, the fuel pressure all run different. We work on all brands, including equipment and semis, so we find problems other shops miss and get your diesel running strong.
