  • If you own a diesel anywhere near Berea, KY, save yourself the trouble and call Preston Jones at PJ Diesel. I brought him my 2021 Silverado Duramax (L5P) and the whole experience was as good as it gets. Preston is honest and upfront with you from the first conversation. He got back to me fast every time I reached out, and the turnaround on my truck was quick. He knows these trucks inside and out, and his pricing is fair. He came in less expensive than a lot of other shops, and the work is excellent. What really sets him apart is how he treats his customers after the job is done. Any time I've wanted to pick his brain about my truck since then, he's been glad to share what he knows. My truck is running better than it ever has. I'm in Richmond, and I would've driven a lot farther than that for work this good. A reliable diesel mechanic you can trust is hard to find, and I couldn't ask for anything better. I'd recommend PJ Diesel to anyone in Madison County or beyond.

About Diesel Engine Repair

Common questions and tips from our work with Berea customers.

What are signs my diesel engine needs repair?
Watch for hard starts, rough idle, a drop in power when towing, more smoke than usual, a new knock or whistle, rising coolant temperature, or a sudden drop in fuel mileage. A check-engine light or a derate warning also means something needs attention. These symptoms can come from fuel, air, emissions or internal engine problems, so a proper diagnosis comes before any parts are replaced.
Why is my diesel blowing black or white smoke?
Black smoke usually points to too much fuel for the air available, often from a leaking injector, a boost leak, a dirty air filter or a turbo problem. White smoke can mean unburned fuel from a cold engine or bad glow plugs, or it can mean coolant getting into the cylinders, which is more serious. Note when the smoke happens and what color it is, then have it checked.
Should I repair my turbo or replace it?
It depends on what failed. A boost problem can come from a leaking hose, a stuck wastegate or vane, or a bad sensor, and those can be fixed without a new turbo. Shaft play, damaged fins or oil leaking through the seals usually mean the turbo needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Finding why it failed, such as an oil supply problem, matters so the new one lasts.

Tip

Keep fresh fuel filters on a diesel

Diesel injectors and high-pressure pumps are built to tight tolerances, and water or dirt in the fuel can damage them. Change fuel filters on the schedule in your owner's manual, and sooner if you buy fuel from many different stations or tow often. Drain the water separator when the dash light comes on. Clean fuel protects some of the most expensive parts on the engine.
